THE TAKE

After finishing the short season with an even record of 4-4 last fall, the Mustangs are looking to better their .500 record in 2021. Coach Rick Debonta will be relying heavily on the leadership of veteran linemen junior Zack Waltsack and senior Moe Gaber who will set the tone in the trenches.  QB contenders' senior Tristan Perez and junior Joe Rehberg have playmaker ability and will both be in the mix in different sets .  In addition, senior varsity veterans Josh Shusterman (WR) and Nick Gomez (RB) are expected to be scoring threats.  Dominic LaScala and Hunter Morris are players who we didn’t see as much of last year, but are expected to help this season as well. On defense, John Walsh is a huge asset who led the team in tackles last year.  Along with Brian McGrath, Sean Howard, and Brian McGrath, the Mustangs are coming into the 2021 season with a well rounded group of players.

Montville's schedule isn't for the faint of heart.  But finishing .500 again will likely deliver enough playoff points to get to the Second Season.  If the Mustangs find themselves in the postseason, they'll likely face regular season opponents like Sparta, Paramus, Jefferson and West Morris so having that extra look at them will only help them in their plight to advance.
