Defense Steps Up In Jefferson Opening Day Win

By Erin Smeilus, 09/07/21, 5:30PM EDT

The Jefferson Falcons came out of the 2021 gate souring with a 34-13 victory against division foe Mendham Minutemen.  The Senior Night win was made even sweeter by winning at home in front of a large opening day crowd to honor the 15 12th graders on the team.

The Minutemen came out strong to start and took advantage of the Falcons early penalties, but couldn't get a score on the board.

Jefferson's senior starting quarterback Eric Garv (#12) played a huge role in creating plays, both running and passing the ball. His offensive line allowed him time to scan the field and find his receiving corps. Garv explained that the confidence that the team had in each other was crucial to their win. "Today we were a lot more confident in our passing and were able to establish a run game.” With Garv’s faith in his teammates, and the teams overall unity, the Falcons were able to clinch the clean win that was at their fingertips.

Junior wide receiver Jacob Studnick (#11) was able to flawlessly execute two touchdowns off of Garv’s dime passes as well as hanging tough while handling kick returns. His quick feet and stellar reflexes came in clutch when Jefferson needed it most.

Senior offensive guard/defensive tackle Justin Eisele (#75) was able to pressure the Minutemen’s quarterback and force him to make decisions that were in favor of the Falcons. Eisele said “going 100 miles per hour and doing what the coaches said” helped fire the team up for Friday night's game. He also stated that “keeping our heads up and focusing on the next play” was critical to maintaining a positive outlook on the game.

The Minutemen were not going to be denied getting into the endzone and scored on their first series to start the 3rd quarter. It was a 60+ yard touchdown from quarterback Frank Kontely (#11) to Adian Lowry (#2). Their second touchdown was a 14 yard touchdown run by Joey Alexion (#22).

Following the successful game, Jefferson’s head coach Jerry Venturino only had positive things to say about his team. Coach V stated “our defense was tremendous holding them [Mendham] to only two scores.” Coach V happily stated that his team of powerful players was able to stick to the original game plan and not have to stray last minute.

Jefferson touchdowns were also scored by Senior Mike Bencivengo (#2) and Junior Travis Osterhout (#34).
